Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team (3-0-0) shutout the York Lions (0-2-1) today 3-0 for their third straight victory of the regular season at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
The rain slowed the Gryphons down today as the turf was more slippery than usual. The slippery conditions slowed a partial breakaway by Breanna Hall (Ottawa, Ont.) as she fell on the play before she was able to take a shot on goal. The game picked up as the rain subsided, and although York remained aggressive they were unable to keep up with Guelph's attack on their goal.
Erica Bain (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored two goals for the Gryphons in the first half, with the first in the 24
th minute and the second only 10 minutes later. York was only able to manage two shots on goal, while Guelph managed five in the first half.
In the second half of the game the Gryphons refused to let up. Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, Ont.) scored another goal for Guelph in the 53
rd minute of play when the Lions goalkeeper lost hold of the ball, putting the score up to 3-0 for the Gryphons. Whiteside lead the team in shots on goal with a total of five, with three of those shots in the second half of the game. Jenny Dunn (West Vancouver, BC.) and Erica Bain both had two shots on goal, putting Guelph up to a total of ten shots on goal throughout the game, with York trailing at only five.
Second year Gryphon goalie Alex King (Ottawa) earned her third straight shutout making five saves in the winning effort.
The Gryphons hit the field next against the Waterloo Warriors tomorrow (Sept. 8) in Waterloo at 1:00 p.m.
