Guelph, Ont. – The Gryphon men's soccer team met the York Lions at home today at the Gryphons Soccer Complex with a final score of 2-0 for the Lions. The Gryphons fall to 1-1-1 on the season.
The Gryphons utilized their speed to the best of their ability, battling not only the Lions but also the wet fall weather. The two teams started off aggressively pursuing the ball, but ultimately the Gryphons maintained possession more effectively for the majority of the first half.
The game turned in York's favour in the 30
th minute when Daniel Fabrizi (Brampton, Ont.) scored a goal, closely followed by a corner kick and another goal for Mark Anthony Kaye (Toronto, Ont.) in the 32
nd minute. Guelph responded by pressuring the York defensemen and pushing the ball up the field, unfortunately they were not able to put any points on the board.
The Gryphons powered back in the second half of play, but were unable to make it past the Lions goalkeeper. They managed four shots on goal regardless, not letting York make any shots on goal in the second half of the game.
Although the York Lions ended the game with a score of 2-0, the Gryphons managed to get seven shots on goal throughout the game, with York only managing five. Robbie Murphy (Ottawa, Ont.) lead the team with three shots on goal, with Jared Agyemang (Brampton, Ont.) following close behind with two shots on goal.
The Gryphons meet the Waterloo Warriors tomorrow (Sept. 8) in Waterloo with the game scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m.
