Guelph, Ont. – Christine Grant scored the only goal in the shootout following a scoreless game as the Guelph Gryphons earned a 1-0 win over the York Lions Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre. The Gryphons move to 7-2-0 on the season while the Lions are 3-4-1.
"I thought we got better as the game went on," said Gryphon head coach Rachel Flanagan. "Megan Lee played an excellence game, turned aside all of our attempts. Once again Steph Nehring came up big when we needed her to, giving us an opportunity to win in it a shootout."
Stephanie Nehring made 16 saves in the win while Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) turned aside an impressive 38 shots.
Guelph took possession of the puck quickly against York, almost immediately down in their territory. The Gryphons set up their game early, looking for a scoring opportunity. When the Lions were able to take control of the puck, they found themselves turning it over to a persistent Guelph team. York showed lots of speed through the neutral zone toward the net, but would miss their opportunity to shoot, as they were unable to beat the Gryphons defenders. A penalty for York player Megan Finlay (Hamilton, Ont.) for holding at 3:05 would result in Guelph's first power play. The Gryphons were able to set up a few scoring opportunities, but York was able to kill the penalty. It would be
Kaitlyn Mora who would come closest to a goal, charging in from the blue line, but York goalie Megan Lee would snatch it out of the air to freeze the puck.
York upped the intensity, finding more ways through the Gryphon defense but ultimately the first period would end scoreless with the Lions going into the second period on a power play after a roughing penalty for Gryphon player
Jessica Pinkerton in the last few seconds of the first period.
The Gryphons started the second period unaffected by the York power play, once again taking control of the game.
Kelly Gribbons had a breakaway early on in the period, which then led to a scrum in front of the net with the Lions goalie ending it by smothering the puck. The Gryphons were aggressively fighting for shots on goal, upping their total by 11 before the period hit the halfway mark. York player, Tonisha Maisonneuve (North Bay, Ont.) was called for hooking at 6:27, which put the Gryphons on the power play. The York defensemen were able to effectively box out Guelph, making it hard to set anything up in front of the net.
Kimberley Wong was able to find Gribbons, who tried to tip the puck in during the power play, but they were not able to beat Lee.
The goalies for both teams were doing well to keep out the onslaught of shots in both periods, with Megan Lee blocking a total of 22 shots at the end of the second period, and Stephanie Nehring with a total of six.
Guelph started the third period on a power play after a five-minute penalty on York player Renata Bastos (Auckland, New Zealand) for tripping, which also included a game misconduct. Back and forth action had both teams in a position to score, but the Lions weren't able to set up in front of the Gryphon net, and Guelph was unable to get past Lee. The third period ended scoreless, and the game went into overtime. However, neither team could overcome the goalies in the overtime period and it would be shoot outs to end the game.
Guelph's Christine Grant would score the winning goal in the shoot out against Megan Lee, to make it 1-0 for Guelph. The Gryphons out shot the Lions with a count of 38-16.
