Gryphon Invitational Results


Guelph, Ont. – This past Sunday the Gryphons hosted the Gryphon Invitational with five schools in attendance including Waterloo, York, Laurier, Brock and Trent. The Gryphons showed that they have depth on both the men's and women's sides.  Both the men's and women's team earned victories in the freestyle relays.
 
Second year Erica Pate (Brantford, Ont.) won the 400m individual medley and the 400m freestyle. Rookie Justine Van Herke (Blenheim, Ont.) won the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and the 100m Individual medley. First year Tess Wey (Waterloo, Ont.) won three individual events and helped her relay team swim to victory in the 4 x 50 freestyle.  She won the 50 free by over four tenths, finished first in the 100m butterfly and then wrapped up the meet with a win in the 100m freestyle. Another rookie, Stephanie Papadedes (Guelph, Ont.) was second in the 50 butterfly to team mate Van Herke, and won the 100 backstroke,
 
On the men's side fifth year Matthew Stephenson (Brantford, Ont.) won the 50m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.  First year Evan Van Moerkerke (Tillsonburg, Ont.) won the 50 free by over one second and then won the 100m freestyle by a full second over team mate Derek Quick, and also finished second in a new event for him (50 butterfly).
 
First year John Carroll (Toronto) won the 100m butterfly by over two seconds over his waterloo competitor, winning the 100m individual medley and the 50m butterfly. He was also on the 4 x 50 freestyle relay.  Other highlights include David Nowicki, just coming off a long break with a sickness winning the 50 breaststroke, first year Curtis Voth (Ajax, Ont.) winning the 50m backstroke and third year Derek Quick winning the 400m free by eight seconds.
