The Gryphon men's soccer team struggled on the road this afternoon (Sept. 22) and was defeated by the Lancers, 1-0 at Alumni Field. The loss drops the Gryphons to 2-4-0 in the OUA West standings and boosts the Lancers to 4-2-1.
Guelph entered the game looking to put together a strong performance following last weekend's disappointing results. The Gryphons dominated possession for the majority of the first half and created five great scoring chances through Robbie Murphy and rookies Mohammed Heydarpour and Jared Agyemang. The team defended solidly across the back, neutralizing Windsor attack for most of the half, with goalkeeper Chad Paparoni also making two saves before half.
The half ended 0-0 with Guelph disappointed to have not converted any of their scoring chances into goals.
The Lancers came out much stronger and with a different game plan in the second but with a few key substitutions, Guelph were again able to deal with the Windsor pressure, though were less successful at creating chances to score of their own. Against the run of play, Windsor broke down the left wing and crossed the ball deep into the box, where they were gifted a goal thanks to a moment of poor defending by Guelph.
Gryphon head coach Keith Mason commented he was happy with his team's improvements, but reminded his players of the need to battle for the whole 90 minutes, and to convert chances when they have been created
