The University of Guelph is proud to announce the commitment of Justin Springer from Burlington, Ont. who is set to play both varsity men's basketball and men's soccer in 2012-13 for the Gryphons.
Springer is from Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School and will be enrolled in History at the University in the fall. He is also the younger brother of current midfielder Brenden Springer on the men's soccer team.
The 6-foot-3 guard captained his high school men's basketball squad for three years and won a silver medal at this year's OFSAA Basketball Championships.
"Justin is starting to see how good he can be on the basketball floor, he is a very athletic player that can defend and has a great attitude," said men's basketball head coach Chris O'Rourke. "We are very excited to see such a character young man join our program."
On the soccer pitch, the centre-back was his high school team captain from 2008-2012 and named the team's MVP in 2009 and 2010.
"I'm very happy to add a talented player such as Justin to our very strong soccer program," said head coach Keith Mason. "Justin will be a great addition to the Gryphons Soccer program, I expect great things from him in the years ahead."
In 2011 Springer won a physical education proficiency award, an athletic achievement award and was named the senior male athlete of the year for his high school.
"I am very excited to be a Guelph Gryphon next year, and being part of two very young and developing teams," said Springer. "I have already established a great relationship with all the coaches on both coaching staffs. The academics, soccer and basketball have led to Guelph being my number one choice. I also have the opportunity to be on the same soccer team as my brother (Brenden), and I can't wait to be training and playing with him everyday on the pitch next year. I am very proud to become a Gryphon."
The men's soccer team finished third in the OUA West this past season with a 10-4-2 regular season record and dropped out of the playoffs following a 2-0 loss to McMaster in the quarterfinals. The men's basketball team was tied for sixth in the OUA West, sporting a 8-14 regular season record. They made it past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08 but dropped a 93-70 quarterfinal loss to Lakehead.
