The Guelph Gryphons men's basketball program is pleased to announce the commitment of recruit Stefan Cornelissen of Aylmer, Ont.
Cornelissen, a 6-foot-7 forward has played for East Elgin Secondary School and the London Ramblers Club Team. This past season he helped lead his high school team to an undefeated season and the TVRA (Thames Valley Regional Athletics) South East hoops championship.
Guelph Gryphons men's basketball head coach Chris O'Rourke expects Cornelissen to have a great future in the Gryphon program.
"We are excited to have Stefan join our program, he brings energy and size that is sorely needed here," said O'Rourke. "Stefan is continuing to make huge strides in his game. I believe he will be the sleeper recruit in the OUA this season."
Cornelissen was named this year's 'Times-Journal' TVRA South player of the year and in 2008 was an international free throw champion with a score of 24-for-25.
Ramblers club coach Matt Tweedie commented on his potential to make an impact in the CIS.
"Stef has an ability to score from the perimeter that not many true big man have. That ability along with an improving inside game will allow him to be a strong contributor throughout his CIS career," said Tweedie.
Cornelissen will be enrolled in Bachelor of Science, Environmental Sciences in the fall at the University.
He will join a list of other top recruits including forward Perrin Smith (Waterloo, Ont.) and guard Justin Springer (Burlington, Ont.).
This year the men's basketball team was tied for sixth in the OUA West, sporting a 8-14 regular season record. They made it past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08 but dropped a 93-70 quarterfinal loss to Lakehead.
