The Guelph Gryphons rolled past the York Lions Sunday afternoon 3-1. In a fast paced and disciplined game the Gryphons eventually wore down a solid York squad finishing on a couple of quality scoring chances.
After a scoreless first period that featured good end to end rushes in which Guelph outshot York 11-10, the Lions opened the scoring in the second period on a goal by Davies. The Gryphons responded before the end of the period with two of their own. The first was scored by
Nicklas Huard (North Bay) on a passing play from
James Merrett (Vernon) and
John Collins (Guelph). The eventual winner was scored on a first-time rocket in the high slot by
Philip Teri (Elora) set up by
Cale Jefferies (Glenboro, Man.) and
Jordan Mock (Dartmouth, N.S.). The Gryphons outshot York 13-8 in the second period.
The Gryphons sealed the deal in the third period with an insurance marker by
Jordan Mock (Bolton) from
Andrew Bathgate (Georgetown) and
Nathan Martine (Port Colborne). Guelph outshot York 10-9 in the third period.
On the afternoon Guelph outshot York 34-27.
Andrew Loverockwent the distance in nets for the Gryphons and Dave Blair went all the way for the Lions.
Guelph continues on the road into the New Year when they travel to Thunder Bay to play the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Fri. Jan. 4.
