The University of Guelph track and field and cross country programs are thrilled to welcome six new coaches to their staff.
Andrew Maloney will join the Gryphons after a highly successful coaching stint at the University of Tulsa. Â During his tenure with the Golden Hurricanes their men's cross country program finished as high as 13th in the NCAA and were perennial NCAA qualifiers while their women also qualified for the Championships. Â Maloney is a former Canadian National Team Member, Canadian Record Holder in the 4 x 800 metre relay and is the author of two books: "End of a Dynasty" and a forthcoming book on coaching legend John McDonnell. Â Maloney also works as a freelance journalist, frequently contributing to Athletics Magazine. Â With the Gryphons he will be working with the middle-distance and distance athletes. Maloney has a Masters of Business Administration and Juris Doctor of Law. In addition to his role with the Gryphons, Maloney will be working with Smith Valeriote Law Firm.
Guyson Kuruneri will join the coaching staff after an illustrious career as a Gryphon athlete. Â Kuruneri was a three-time team captain, OUA Champion, and two-time CIS medalist in the long jump. Â In 2011, he capped his career with his first All-Canadian distinction winning a CIS silver medal. Â He is the school recorder-holder in the long jump and also a recipient of the W.F Mitchell Sportsman Of The Year award. Â The John F Ross graduate will be working with the jumps group. Â Kuruneri has a degree in Political Science and Sociology and will be working in the Department of Athletics as a Personal Trainer.
Owen Willems will join the staff on a full time basis after serving as a part time assistant last season. Â Willems is one of the most decorated athletes in Gryphon track and field history. Â A three time CIS medalist in the weight throw and former team captain, Willems is the school record holder in the event. Â He is also a two-time medalist at the Canadian Championships in the discus and has represented Canada internationally. Â Under his leadership this summer, Gryphon throwers Brent Roubos and Tim Hendry enjoyed phenomenal seasons. Â Roubos was the Canadian Champion in the discus while Hendry finished the summer ranked in the top 100 in the world in the shot put. Willems is completing his PhD in Animal Breeding and Genetics..
Christoph Wand will rejoin the Gryphon staff as Willems' assistant with the throws group. Â Wand is a former OUA All-Star in the weight throw. Â After graduating as an athlete Wand coached with the Gryphons until 2004. Â Wand has a Masters of Science from the University of Guelph and works for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Craig Taylor will join the Gryphons as an assistant coach with the cross country team. Â Taylor is the Head Coach of the Canadian Regional Triathlon Centre in Guelph. Â He has coached on numerous national teams with Triathlon Canada and works as the primary coach with a number of Gryphon cross country runners including Alexander Hinton, Domi Jamnicky, Ian Donald and Melissa Jones as well as incoming athletes Joanna Brown and Tristan Woodfine. Â Taylor has a Masters of Science from the University of Toronto.
Josh Roundell, another former team captain and WF Mitchell Sportsman Of The Year recipient, will join the staff as the strength and core coach. Â Roundell was part of six CIS Team Championships during his tenure with the Gryphons and was an All-Canadian on the track. Roundell has a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Guelph and is Can Fit Pro certified instructor. Â Roundell also works as a personal training specialist with Vitality Fitness Solutions.
