Oct. 19: Guelph 83 - Humber 72
GUELPH - If Tuesday night's exhibition basketball game was any indication, this year's Gryphons may feature two very high scoring rookies off their bench.
The Gryphon men's basketball team defeated the Humber Hawks 83-72 in their preseason matchup tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. The team was led by George Mason (Orillia, Ont.), who had 20 points, shooting an impressive 6-for-7 from three point range. Michel Clark (Burlington, Ont.), a newcomer along with Mason, added 19 points as the two rookies shot a combined 12-18 from the field.
Mark Perrin led the Hawks with 19 points off the bench. Mike Dvorak and Michael Acheampong each added nine points respectively.
Jerald Greenidge (Brampton, Ont.), making his first start, scored nine points and a game leading eight rebounds.
Mason and Clark both came off the bench as early foul trouble plagued the starting guards. Mason led the Gryphons throughout the game, as he shot an extraordinary 6-7 from three point range.
Clark, not to be outdone, calmly sealed the Gryphons victory by hitting numerous clutch free throws to finish an impressive 6-for-8 from the line.
Guelph went into the half with a 35-25 lead, but the Hawks stormed back to tie the game at 58 apiece to enter the fourth. Turnovers again troubled the Gryphons.
The Gryphons will hope to keep up their hot shooting as they host the Guelph Phoenix this Friday at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 7p.m. The Gryphons will also play another exhibition game against Acadia on Saturday (Oct. 23) at 7:00 p.m.
